“Manipal Academy for Higher Education (MAHE-Manipal Dubai Campus) in association with Dubai Knowledge Village, Department of Student Services and Programs (DSSP), cordially invites you to participate in Ways of Seeing’06, a camera-phone photography competition...”

Pictures, universal means of communication, are expressions of a human being’s desire to arrest time and all that he sees for eternity. Photography as a medium has developed to the point where it is around us at all times. Camera phones have played a big part in this pushing the boundaries of when and how. The experience of using a camera phone has taught that, flashy and expensive equipment is not always necessary. Above all the camera phone is a beautiful gateway for most amateurs to graduate to the wonderful art of painting with light.

THE PHILOSOPHY
Every artist has a unique vision, an individual way of seeing. Some look at a leopard and want to capture its speed, and some grace in their work. Others its rippling muscles, mesmerizing eyes, or rich sheen of its coat. Some may want to create a completely new way of looking at this marvel of a creation. Their works may be imaginative, rather than realistic. A photograph not only reflects the individual’s vision, also a product nurtured by Time and Culture itself. New technology and materials also liberates the artist behind photographs.

THE OBJECTIVE
MAHE Photography Society’s (MAPS) principle objective behind the contest is to create awareness and initiate young creative minds to explore and develop a powerful language of visual communication using photography as a medium and establish camera mobile photography as an art form and a format in itself.

THE CONTEST
The contest is slated for the first week of November’06 giving the participants the whole of summer and the holy month of Ramadan to prepare for the contest. Entries will be accepted till 4 o'clock on 31st October 2006. A maximum of eight (8) entries may be submitted by the candidate under the category of her / his choice.

THE CATEGORIES
The entries may be submitted in any one of the following categories:-

·         City life: A city, they say, bears the face and emotions of its dwellers. From being a pinnacle of human achievement to a dark, cold concrete jungle – a city can don many different façades. A camera-phone provides many opportunities to capture the life cloaked within the city buzz. It could be day or night, the city is always vibrant and alive, and this category gives participants an opportunity to freeze a moment of life in this commotion.

·         Emotions: Laughter, sadness, anger, and loneliness – four different people or faces of one? Amalgamated elements or pieces of a jigsaw puzzle? This category gives participants a chance to explore the ‘within’, without which we would not be distinguishable. The contestants are free to explore both the microcosm and the macrocosm.

·         Summer Faces: This category gives contestants the freedom to explore both the faces of and in summer. Capture any of summer’s many visages in its finest to astonish the world with what you see about summer that others don’t. This category offers one such opportunity to the participants.

Hidden within each is a ‘talent’ awaiting discovery and ‘ideas’ exploration. Explore the corridors of one’s mind to break all dogmatic boundaries of expression and define ways of seeing in one’s own unique form.

Using a technology that is popular with the youth of today, the contest aims at harnessing the trend of camera-phone imaging as a serious discipline.

Something About MAPS

None of the high-quality equipment in the world can guarantee that one will take great pictures. Even knowing how to use the camera effectively will not necessarily give our photos the description that all photographers strive for : Art. Certainly, these things help, but capturing that elusive artistic quality requires special skills that every photographer worth his tripod must possess.

MAHE Photography Society provides members with the opportunity and the requisite resources to practice and develop their photography related skills both as an artist and as a technician.
